Q&A on our new Whole Food Mixer with Dr. Sarah Dodd

Meet the Whole Food Mixer: Fresh, Plant-Based Innovation for Your Dog
Adding fresh, whole foods to your dog's diet just got easier. Our new Whole Food Mixer brings the convenience of shelf-stable food with the nutritional power of minimally processed ingredients. "The Mixer includes a dehydrated blend of vegetables, fruits, and grains that is combined with warm water at home to become a nutritionally complete wet food or topper for your dog's dry food," explains veterinary nutritionist Dr. Sarah Dodd, who formulated this breakthrough product.

Beyond the Basic Topper
Most meal toppers come with a catch – they can only make up a small percentage of your dog's daily calories without risking nutritional imbalance. We took a different approach. "Most commercial toppers are formulated to be only 10% of a dog's total calories," notes Dr. Dodd. "If you add more than the recommended 10% allowance, it could lead to a nutritional imbalance." That's why we developed a formula that's complete and balanced on its own, giving you the freedom to serve it however works best for your dog.
"Any ratio you'd like to use will not affect the nutritional balance of your dog's diet," explains Dr. Dodd. "This product has been formulated with all of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that an adult dog needs."
Fresh Nutrition, Preserved Naturally
The power of the Whole Food Mixer lies in its carefully selected ingredients and gentle processing method. Dr. Dodd highlights the key nutritional benefits: "Whole food ingredient sources, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables like kale, spinach, and blueberries, mix of protein sources - soy, peanut, flax, whole grains (rolled oats and barley), less processing equals more nutrient availability, plus extra hydration in the diet."
For protein, we turned to one of nature's most complete plant sources: soy. "Soy is a legume that offers a complete protein/amino acid profile, low in fat and high in protein and fiber, with a long track record as a protein source for both dogs and humans," Dr. Dodd explains. In the form of textured vegetable protein (TVP), it creates a protein-rich base that supports lean muscle mass.
Easy Integration, Maximum Impact
Whether you're looking to add fresh food to your dog's dry food or transition to a fully fresh diet, the Whole Food Mixer is adaptable for your needs. For dogs already eating Petaluma's baked food, Dr. Dodd notes the complementary benefits: "Baking offers some benefits over traditional kibble in terms of ingredient inclusion because it is less processed and uses lower temperatures. However, there are some ingredients that are not as well suited to heat processing. Fresh veggies and leafy greens have the highest level of antioxidants and micronutrients when not undergoing any heat processing."
A Fresh Choice for Most Dogs
The Whole Food Mixer is designed for healthy adult dogs of all sizes and breeds. As Dr. Dodd explains: "This product is a great fit for healthy adult dogs of any breed or size. Plant-based allergies are rare in dogs, but if a dog has a known sensitivity or allergy to an ingredient like soy or peanuts, this product would not be appropriate. This product is not appropriate for growth-stage dogs (puppies) or dogs that require a therapeutic diet, like chronic kidney disease (CKD)."
Making the Switch
Transitioning to any new food should be done gradually to support digestive comfort. "It's always recommended to introduce any new dog food formula slowly over the course of a few days to minimize disruption to their digestive system," advises Dr. Dodd. "However, if you're already feeding a fiber-rich diet like Petaluma, the transition time should be very minimal."
