Picky eaters no more!

Daria Lee Sharman • 2023-10-04

"I bought the senior blend originally for my adult lab mix who has has horrible skin allergy issues since day 1 - I had tried every organic meat-based protein diet imaginable. I eat a plant-based diet and figured what the heck - I’ll try it! Not only does he love it, his itching/coat quality has improved dramatically in just a week and my other two picky eaters are basically trying to get his food! Might have to become a full Petaluma household!"

Our dog LOVED this food!

Joy Rapp • 2023-12-12

"I ordered a sample of this food for one of our dogs, who has been struggling with acute hemorrhagic gastroenteritis for months. We have had many vet visits and three emergency vet trips (one overnight), from June through early October (including antibiotics, probiotics, x-rays, an ultrasound, so many tests - I could go on). Finding absolutely NOTHING wrong and yet the bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and no appetite continuing, we tried prescription hydrolyzed protein food. I understand that many dogs continue to lose weight and/or will not eat while being given this diet. Understandable, as it is a particularly gross looking and smelling, weirdly-textured food. Jewel is very finicky as it is, but she has eaten solely this diet for 2-1/2 months. As I expected she has grown tired of it and it is a chore to get her to eat, if she eats at all. Anticipating this, I did some research and found that plant-based diets will sometimes work for dogs with chronic gastroenteritis. I ordered a sample, sprinkled some of the kibble into her wet food and she ate it up! I have been waiting anxiously for the tell-tale stomach grumbling, vomiting, and running in and out with diarrhea that usually comes if she ingests even one pebble of any other food, but so far so good. I did the same this morning, and she picked out and ate the Petaluma kibble but is refusing to eat the hydrolyzed diet food. I am about to order some more and continue the slow transition to see if this food continues to work for her. It is expensive but right along the lines of the prescription food, and we truly do not have any alternatives at this point (NO animal proteins have worked for her, including the old faithfuls, egg whites or boiled chicken and rice). Fingers crossed it continues to work and she continues to eat it!"

A win for our picky dog!

Keirsten S. • 2025-05-07

"We have switched foods a few times in hopes of finding something that would hold our Great Pyrenees interest. We have prob switched her food 10 times throughout her life. She is 8 years old. We've tried everything. I stumbled upon Petaluma and ordered a sample of the senior food. She was obsessed! So we took the plunge and started the switch. She is so happy! She gobbles up every bite. She peeks around the corner and impatiently waits for me to put her bowl down. Something my husband mentioned is that the food smells better than any we've had. I am so grateful to give her something that she loves that is also good for our planet. I've also noticed her coat is super shiny and she looks really healthy."

My dog loves this

Tracy Guillory • 2024-05-12

"My 14 year old husky/border Collie loves this food. After struggling with many food allergies on standard dog food, and not the cheap varieties either, we switched to vegan food and his allergies cleared. Problem was finding one he liked. We've tried a number of popular brands and then found Petaluma. He actually begs for his food now. He is at a healthy weight and is able to stay active. Even back to chasing squirrels. Great product."

My Dachshunds Love It!

Haydee • 2025-01-21

"My 3 rescue dachshund mixes love this kibble even as a treat! I purchased one of each formula as 2 of my pups are young, 7months & 3yrs, & 1 is a senior, 11yrs, because my two young ones are allergic to most meat. My only issue, that one of my extremely picky pups noticed as well, is that the roasted pb & sweet potato kibble is now larger & he began spitting it out! Luckily, he loved it again after I began soaking it."

Excellent nutrition and my dogs love it!

Finn • 2025-02-15

"I researched dog foods for over a year, analyzing ingredients and lots of discussions with my vet. I choose Petaluma and my dogs are thriving. I have two 8.9 year old Border Collies and a 14 year old Springer Spaniel/Retriever mix. They love the taste and act like they're getting a treat. Their energy level is high and poops very normal. My older dog had become finicky about eating, sometimes refusing. He's on meds so he needs to eat so he can have his medication. With Petaluma he's excited about his food and finishes every portion. I love that 50% of the adult food is organic! If I'm not making my dogs' food, I'm feeding them Petaluma."

So Beloved (2 years in)

Hannah (Ellie, Yuki & Kaia) • 2025-07-12

"This kibble is so beloved by my pups, that they actively chose it over traditional meat kibble. About 2 years ago— The oldest, Ellie (current 10 year old Klee Kai with regular upset tummy issues), was found to have developed a serious allergy to kibble with meat. Probably the preservatives, the vet surmised. Vet recommended a vegan / vegetarian kibble for her going forward. We tried a few, including prescription, but Petaluma was the obvious winner. It was such a hit, that Ellie’s two younger sisters (Yuki, currently a 4 year old Jindo, and Kaia, currently a 2 year old Klee Kai) started turning their nose up at their meat kibble and demanding Petaluma instead. 2 years later, all 3 are all firmly on Petaluma kibbles, with a supplemental organic meat topper. They freakin’ gobble it up. 5/5 completely recommend"

The best poops ever!!

"My lovely Ripley has had a big problem with a yeast imbalance for a few months. Her coat has been stiff and oily. I’ve been feeding her y’all’s food consistently now and all of those issues are now gone. She is happier now and no more itching or smell. I praise y’all’s products wherever I go! Thank you for providing a wonderful solution for healthier dogs that actually works. Thank you again! Marc and Ripley"

Patience = Success

Gladys Shabshab • 2022-04-18

"I would be lying if I said I wasn't apprehensive when our new vet recommended for us to try switching from V-Dogfood to Petaluma. Her main concern was in the retention of enough amino acids for a 11 pound Cavapoo. So I dug into the material she handed over to me and some research on my own and decided to move forward. As with most dogs patience is the essience to success, so our journey began. The transition wasn't easy, as we followed the suggested portions and struggled watching him thinking he didn't like the food. Sometimes we humans forget what damage we cause to the adopted animals we love and adore so much, thus here lies most of our problems. Understanding that when we gave him food from what we humans are eating was the main source of the problem for us. For those of you reading this, I will tell you to please consider if you are making the same mistake. This little guy held out thinking we would give in and thus he would remain "The Champ"...lol! Yes, we held our ground and we won this battle, hahahahahaha! We managed to get him transitioned and then slowly started to add steamed carrots, peas, mango, strawberries, turmeric, ginger, etc.. but always and only to his bowl and not from our plates. The transition took months and was a success, we saw a great change in his eating habits finally, and with good structured timing throughout the day. I should have mentioned that we started with the old formula and that was a little bit of a challenge as he didn't seem to like the extra unstructured nutrients, I had to separate them out for him to eat, that ended up working out well. With the new formula you will not have this issue. Petaluma was nice enough to respond to an email and called me to discuss his transition and offered to send me a 5 pound bag of the new formula. Last, lets talk about poop...lol! The one most important thing that slipped my mind as we used V-Dogfood to transition our first dog is the cleansing of the body from the old food to the new. Regardless if its wet food or dry, the transition takes time and its most evident in the poop. You will notice it changing color and with Petaluma it's no different .Since this product is high in fiber you will see a larger amount of poops, be patient as this transition is expected and the body is also cleaning itself out from the old food. In conclusion, we are now about to order our second 18 pound bag of Petaluma and in one years time when the vet will have tested for the amino acids along with other blood work to make sure our little Cavapoo is getting the best possible nutrients, that’s when we will truly know that this product is an all star. For now, I will tell you it's been worth the effort and the time, seeing our baby happy at the end of the day is what makes you a great doggy-mom. Best wishes to all!"

Great Topper for Sensitive Pups!

Nat • 2024-10-18

Excellent nutrition for my senior dogs

Peggy Rinehart • 2023-09-21

"I had been feeding a different vegan food to my dogs for several years. They were having problems with intermittent upset stomachs and frequent loose stools. I had resorted to probiotic supplements, etc., without much improvement. They have only been on the Petaluma Senior for about a week, but already noticing a big change. I am so impressed with the quality of the food. It smells terrific. My dogs love it. There was no problem whatsoever transitioning from their previous food. Plant based diets are superior nutrition for humans and dogs, so very happy with Petaluma Senior."

After some trial and error, I'm happy to say this brand is approved by my picky senior husky!

Leonard Burnham • 2023-10-31

"A couple of months ago I took in a senior husky (he turns 10 in December). When I was transitioning him to Petaluma, he would avoid eating his old kibble, so I was stoked that he seemed to like this brand as much as I do (he is a picky eater). However, he was eating less than half of what he needed and often grimaced while chewing, so I thought maybe he wasn't a fan of the flavor after all. To encourage him to eat more, I started heating up some canned pumpkin and mixing it with his food (sometimes along with PB powder and water). This worked for several weeks, but he stopped eating the kibble and would just lap up the softer foods/liquids. I tried adding a plant-based base mix with hot water—he finished his food for several days, but we ran into the same issue as before. Running out of ideas, I started going in with a potato masher after adding hot water and the topper. He began eating a more appropriate amount, but he avoided the areas with larger pieces of kibble. That's when it finally clicked for me—it wasn't that he disliked his food, he just didn't want to chew it. I bought a food processor and I use ~ 3:2 cups of Petaluma to hot water, pulsing until it has a pâté consistency. I don't add toppers or anything else to it anymore—he always leaves his bowl empty after mealtimes! About a month ago we began arthritis injections, so I'm glad I can feed him food that will support his OA treatment and overall health. His coat has become so soft and shiny!"

So Happy!

Jessica Figley • 2024-02-23

"I’ve done a lot of research on dog food and tried all varieties and variations and this dog food really ticks all the boxes for me. I really wanted to get away from meat for the longevity of my dogs. I looked into making homemade kibble and it wouldn’t be any better than Petaluma! You can tell it’s real food especially when you open the bag and smell the peanut butter. Plus, when switching foods my dogs would pick this kibble out first before eating their old food. They love it and so do I!"

Amazing!

Haggerty Vlada • 2021-10-28

"Our two dogs (12 y.o. Maltese and 3 y.o. Boston Terrier) love Petaluma food! Charlie (Boston) has a sensitive stomach and had soft, almost runny poops with other vegan foods. After switching to Pefuma he finally has nice solid poops! Sorry for TMI, but I think this is a great sign that this food is working well for him! The fact that it's made without harming any animals and it smells nice is just amazing for me personally. We all love it for different reasons. Thank you!"

Sweet potato chews are a big hit

Wendy Seay • 2023-11-20

"My two Standard poodles wake by 6 am, before meal time at 7 am. They each get a chew and are happy and satisfied and will even nap again. The chews smell great and I love the packaging. We are on autoship so always have them on hand."

Helps keep my dachshund's tummy issues at bay!

Krys • 2025-06-30

"To make a long story short, my dachshund mix, who's almost 9 years old, has BVS, a condition that causes nausea and vomiting in between meals. I feed him three times a day with treats in between to prevent this, but I've also discovered that adding some whole food to his regular kibble alleviates the issue completely. To make sure he was still getting the right nutrients, I was previously using fresh frozen food as a topper (25% of his meal), but it was getting expensive and I hated how wasteful it felt shipping frozen food. I tried a well-known dehydrated food brand to replace it, but it did not sit well with my dog. I figured it couldn't hurt to get a trial bag of this new food from Petaluma and see if it works. Lo and behold, he loves it and I've not seen any digestive issues whatsoever. It also smells SO MUCH better than the meat-based dehydrated food we tried before. Thank you for making a balanced topper that's easy to love! :)"

Bella loves is

Jacqueline Lammert • 2023-04-06

"Our mini dachshund pup Bella was on the food her breeder recommended and she was so uninterested even when we fancied it up. The food smelled AWUFL and made her breath smell so bad, no matter how much we brushed her teeth or gave her treats for better breath. Her poops were always really dark and hard on the old food. With petaluma her poops are lighter and softer (seems more comfy for her to go potty) and she's eating regularly without fuss! Most notably her breath doesn't smell bad at all anymore and it's so nice not to have to hold my breath when I'm getting her food (petaluma is the best smelling dog food I've ever smelled). Secondly, the emails that were sent describing how to ease in to the food and what to expect for her were awesome, and the emails/texts they send out to make sure your order comes right when you need it are incredibly helpful. Overall 10/10 experience!"

"I'm so happy I switch to Petaluma! The ingredients and company are great. Best of all my dog loves it! I mix it with a little vegan canned food and water. I hope Petaluma comes out with its own wet food! My dog is the healthiest dog I know and never has digestion issues. His teeth and coat always look great too!"

Excellent so far and need more time

JM • 2025-10-23

"I am fortunate in that my dog is not a picky eater. I am transitioning him from a raw meat diet to this for a number of reasons including food safety. His breath and beard smell so much better on this dry food too. I have a senior dog and let the food soak in water for a good while so the nuggets are softer and the other day, he jumped up on the table to gobble down the freshly soaking kibble. Fair to say he loves it and his transition has been smooth. Still mixing with raw at the moment. Proof will be 6 months down the line tho - is he healthy and happy. Love having a dry veggie dog food option for sure!! THANK YOU!!!!"

2 days of Petaluma insight

Anita Amos • 2023-03-25

"My 8yrs Lhasa, raised on fresh raw 80/10/10 since born, later on raw freeze dried , suffers since 1 yr of itchy skin infections, ear infections, yeast infections, hair loss and so much more. My vet visits amount over 4000 dollar and no achievements. Commercial freeze dried meat proteins are not always same quality and changes could have made an impact on his health. Desperate I switched to Homeopathy Remedies and Petaluma hoping for positive signs. While my order arrived in no time (AWESOME) my dog loves the taste (MORE AWESOME). Itchiness has not slowed down at all, but its only 2 days, I will wait at least 2 weeks to see itchiness changes. My dog never had issues with digestion, does not matter what he eats. So his poop now is way too abundant and he poops 2-3 times each walk and each poop is big, that's a lot of poop for a little dog. Is he actually keeping something to keep his weight? When the poop is not firm enough to be grabbed easily with the poop bag than it's not as firm as I would like to see and as it should be. Not sure how much the body actually retains from this food, seems like little to nothing. I am used to see little sizes of poop, meaning his body kept 70% of his raw food while 30% left as poop. But raw feeding is different from vegan food of course. I am not quite happy with the ingredients either, there are no green veggies at all other than parsley being a herb and am not a friend of white potatoes either. I also expected a change in energy levels because nutrients are abundant but have not seen any changes in his attitude, what is important and should be seen right away. But wait, I am not giving up on Petaluma yet, having ordered 2 x 5 lb bags we will finish at least one before I give my final thoughts on it. Thank you."

LOVE this concept and the food seems amazing...

Carol • 2021-09-07

"I bought my first bag and my English cream golden retriever seemed to like it. She just was spayed and transitioning during that period of time probably was not the best idea. It took her a couple of weeks to get her true appetite back after surgery. I had to hand feed Petaluma to her while she was recovering. I was transitioning from premium raw animal based protein. She was pooping 7-8 times per day very large amounts. I did not think the food was agreeing with her. I wrote to Petaluma and they immediately refunded my money. They also explained how transitioning from raw meal protein to vegan kibble is quite a change and may take a time to adjust. I love the customer service and I love the concept of vegan. I have read how plant based organic can literally add years to our pups life. I may have reacted too soon. I feel bad now that I did not give it more time. I only used 1/2 the bag so far while transitioning. I am going to continue feeding her this food and observe. I am really hoping it all works out and I can continue with Petaluma. Please forgive me Petaluma for jumping the gun and assuming it was your food that didn't agree with my dog. It just may have been, like you said...the transitioning period! Thank you for making this product...thank you for helping me understand the transition and thank you for the immediate refund with no questions asked. Keep up with what you are doing!! I want to be a forever customer because of a great product that will help my dog live longer and a customer service team to help with that journey. What more can you ask for from a company. Hoping for more organic ingredients along the way and maybe more flavors. Again, thank you PETALUMA! I am truly hoping to order again!!!"

Dogs love it, but my wallet doesn't

Skyler Patterson • 2024-04-07

"My dogs love this food. The food itself seems to be well made, smells appealing and is a perfect bite size. I even tried a piece myself and can say it tastes pretty dang good! They definitely poop more often on this food but that isn't a bad thing. Biggest con is the price is just too high for me to keep up with for two large dogs. Almost $100 for 18 lbs is a lot more expensive than other vegan dog food brands. The food is definitely of a higher quality, I do just wish it was a tad more affordable or at least came in a bigger size. If I'm in the place financially to be able to exclusively feed Petaluma to my dogs I will be back. It's really a fantastic product."

Great!

Jessica Young • 2023-07-10

"My dog can be picky about food and she hasn't been excited for her dog food for some time now (she's been eating plant-based dog food for about 3 years or so). This is the first time in about a year that I don't have to ask her twice to eat when I put her food in her bowl. She hasn't been eating the dog food for too long, so it might be too early to say or I might just be seeing what I want at this time, but it seems as though she gets up more quickly when lying in the same position for a long time and she doesn't seem as stiff (she's 11 years old). I'll feel secure in what I see over the course of around 3 months and she's not even finished her first bag. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is that this is a very expensive dog food. I'm not saying that there aren't reasons and it's not worth it, but... it's very expensive nonetheless."

Still Mr. Picky

Lois Brady • 2025-05-21

"My boy has tried (and continues to try) your food. He's always been a very picky eater and has reacted similarly to your food. He will eat it but like most any food I've ever given him, he is just not excited about it. I'm gonna keep trying."

Still working on it

Kelly Moritz • 2021-07-20

"My little fussy pants Pepper seems to enjoy Petaluma more than the previous vegan food we tried (rhymes with mild birth), but she just isn’t as excited about it as I am. She’ll only finish her meal if I’ve added some Halo vegan canned food to it. I tried it and I think it tastes waaaay better than her last food (mmm mmm, peanut butter.) And her poop looks fantastic! Hence, my excitement. Unfortunately I just don’t know if this is going to make the “A” list unless Pepper starts getting more excited about it too. She’s just a very picky eater. We both want to do our part to help the planet, and not eating animals is a great way to do it, so I’m hopeful we can find a solution she likes."

Pretty good

Aimee Lou • 2022-03-14

"My dogs have been on a plantbased food since we got them 4 years ago. I switched to this because it was baked at low temps which preserves more of the nutrients. My dogs love it just as much or more than their previous food. I found the ingredients weren’t quite as good as their old food and Petaluma is more expensive for a smaller sized bag but I still am trying it because of the low temp baking. It’s too soon to say how the dogs are doing on it, but they definitely enjoy it! Love that it comes in environmentally friendly packaging."

Dog couldn't eat it, unfortunately.

Anthony Butler • 2023-04-08

"My dog really tried to like it, when I give him some he does try to eat it [which is surprising for him as he's very picky], but unfortunately the pieces are too large and firm for him [geriatric toy breed], and when broken into smaller pieces they have an unpleasant rough texture that he doesnt seem to like bc he spits it out. He also doesn't enjoy moistened food so rehydrating it doesn't help in our case. I'm really glad Petaluma gives free samples, and I hope they eventually come out with a softer or smaller version more appropriate for seniors and toy breeds. If they do within my dog's lifespan, then I'll give it another try. We won't let the sample go to waste, we'll moisten it and mix it with his regular food for supplemental use or give it to our local shelter."

Soft Stools

Jackie Dunne • 2024-06-25

"Our dog has always been finicky about what he eats, and it takes sprinkling treats into his food or coating his food in peanut butter to get our dog to eat it. He seems to be most consistent eating this food, and we love knowing that it’s baked and not pressure cooked with obscure ingredients. However, we are surprised that half of the time his poops are very soft and mushy and are difficult to pick up without leaving mushy traces of his poop. We’ve been using this food for months now, so we know it’s not just from our dog getting into something he’s not supposed to (like I said, he’s very particular about what he eats). Any insights? My husband wants us to change his food for this reason."
